This was probably one of my favourite tasks – despite being a painting job! This hardwood door and frame were looking really tired. The stain and varnish on the lower parts were flaking, cracked and faded. The lower door frame timber was water-stained in places where weather had penetrated the original protective finish. Of course in my eagerness to get started I forgot to take the before pictures! Anyway, it required several hours of fairly aggressive scraping and sanding to prep the door and frame. In some places cutting right back to bare timber as required to reattain the full glory of the hardwood material. The customer supplied the varnish and in two sessions on warm, late September, days I brushed that varnish like warm honey onto that lovely redwood door and frame. The finished colour and shine reminded me of a freshly fallen autumn conker straight out of its green spiky shell
